Like the mythical lost continent that shares its name, the Atlantis Jazz Ensemble's music lies somewhere between the shores of Africa, Europe, and the Americas, influenced by jazz currents stemming from both sides of the Atlantic.
The group was founded in 2013 by saxophonist Zakari Frantz and pianist Pierre Chrétien of The Souljazz Orchestra, both looking to explore new directions in modal, spiritual, and esoteric jazz music.
After spending a few years refining the group's signature sound through residencies at the now defunct Petit Chicago in Old-Hull, in 2016 the Atlantis Jazz Ensemble released its debut LP,Oceanic Suite, a seven-part album depicting the sea and other related themes. The record went on to becomes the second most played jazz album on Canadian radio that year (just behind BadBadNotGood's IV), which lead to some high-profile concerts for Atlantis, seeing the group share bills with the likes of Anderson .Paak and Kamasi Washington.
Now in its tenth year of existence, the Atlantis Jazz Ensemble has just returned to the studio, and is planning the release of its sophomore album this fall... Stay tuned!
